Covered Bridges
of Winchester, NH

There are two historic covered bridges remaining in Winchester.

One, the Ashuelot Bridge, is located in the Upper Village of Ashuelot, just off route 119 and spans the Ashuelot River. It was built of the Town lattice truss style in 1864 for $4,650 . It has the distinction of being numbered #1 on the list of Covered Bridges archived by the State of New Hampshire.

The bridge is 169' long and made up of two spans, 77' and 77' 3" in lenght. It has an overall width of 28' 6" , a roadway width of 16' 3" and a vertical clearance of 11' 7". There are sidewalks on both sides and the bridge is currently posted for six tons. It is maintained by The Town of Winchester

The Ashuelot Bridge's World Guide Number is 29-03-02 , and is considered by local historians to be one of New Hampshire's most elaborate covered bridges. Its original purpose was to transport wood across the river for use by the Ashuelot Railroad, which had a station on the south side of the river in the village of Ashuelot. It has also been known as the Village Bridge and the Village Station Bridge. Some sources credit Nicholas Powers as the builder. The Ashuelot Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Coombs #2 Covered Bridge is a quaint, 118 foot structure employing the "Town Lattice Truss" style, spanning the Ashuelot River near the Winchester/Swanzey town line on Coombs Rd. It was built in 1837. An interesting note is that the stone abutments were built without mortar. The sides are covered.

Coombs Rd. is located on Rt.10, about 3/4 of a mile south of the Winchester/Swanzey line on the right. The bridge is 1/3 of a mile down the road. There is a sign pointing the way.

Other past bridges included the Middle Bridge, just south of the village on Rt. 10. It was used until at least 1936, as you can see by this flood photo (right).
