Household Hazardous Waste Collections Resume

It's time to start planning for hazardous waste collections for 1998! The City of Keene hopes to complete construction of the first full service permanent household hazardous waste facility in the State of New Hampshire in early summer. The facility will be located adjacent to the Keene Recycling Center. Four collections will be held between April 1998 and June 1998. The current schedule is as follows:

·Saturday, April 25th, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. --

Participating Communities: Keene

·Saturday, May 9th, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.--

Participating Communities: Alstead, Harrisville, Hinsdale, Keene and Swanzey

·Saturday, May 23rd, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. --

Participating Communities: Keene and Sullivan

·Saturday, June 13th, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. --

Participating Communities: Alstead, Chesterfield,

Hinsdale, Keene, Marlborough, Richmond, Roxbury, and Winchester.

If you are a resident of a community that has not signed up to participate, you can transport materials to the facility during any scheduled collection and will be charged at the following rate: less than 10 gallons of material $20, more than 10 gallons, but less than 20 gallons $30, more than 20 gallons, but less than 50 gallons $38. Payment for individuals will be made directly to the contracted vendor at the time of delivery.

A unique feature of the permanent household hazardous waste facility will be a reuse center for items such as good quality paint which can be reused by citizens looking to do a small job. The household hazardous waste program benefits from reuse by not having to pay disposal costs for these items. Residents can access and obtain material from the reuse center at no charge.

Look forward to seeing you in the spring. Remember, the best way to manage hazardous waste is to not produce it in the first place.

We welcome your participation in the permanent collection facility. Remember, to qualify for potential grant monies, the Letter of Commitment must be returned by December 30, 1997.

In the past two years we have prevented over 23,000 gallons of hazardous waste from being improperly disposed of.

Note: Charlie says -- "If you have an item that you no longer use, but is in otherwise good condition, bring it to the Keene Swap Shop located at the Keene Recycling Center. Items can be dropped off or taken free of charge. You never know what you might find."
