The first of four household hazardous waste collections in 1997 is scheduled for Saturday, September 27th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Keene Recycling Center off Route 12 North. The free collection is open to residents of Keene, Alstead, Chesterfield, Hinsdale, Marlborough, Roxbury, Swanzey and Walpole.
The collection will be the first one held at the Keene Recycling Center. The location of the collections has been moved from the Department of Public Works at 580 Main Street in order to familiarize residents with the location of the soon to be constructed permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility which will open in the spring of 1998.
Almost everyone has some type of hazardous waste in their home, but many people don't even realize it. If you have products labeled "toxic," "poison," "corrosive," "irritant," "flammable," or "danger" that you no longer use, bringing them to this collection assures they will be disposed in a responsible manner. Contrary to the earliest collections held in the early 90's, the process has become extremely efficient. From start to finish, the collection takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, and you don't even have to get out of your car.
Also, back by popular demand, on September 27th, adjacent to the household hazardous waste collection, the City of Keene will hold a truckload recycled plastic garden products sale open to all area residents featuring the OBEX Novawood products. Compost bins (don't forget the leaves are about to fall), raised garden kits (a great place to use your compost), landscape ties and garden tiles (make a patio in a couple minutes), will all be sold at wholesale prices. Novawood products are a stellar example of remanufacturing using products that are normally discarded. Come see for yourself what becomes of some of the plastic processed at the Keene Recycling Center. Last year, I purchased a compost bin and some raised garden kits and they work very well. Novawood products are durable, non-toxic and attractive.
Note: Charlie says - "Directions to the household hazardous waste collection and truckload recycled plastic garden products sale: from the West Street/Route 12 intersection, go north on Route 12 for approximately 3.6 miles. As you crest the hill, you will see a Gulf gasoline station. The entrance to the solid waste facility is 50 yards past the gas station on the left side of the road."
