Holiday Tips for Waste Reduction and Recycling

Recycling good ideas is a gift that never goes out of style. In the spirit of the holidays here are a few ideas you to enjoy.

Purchase holiday cards made from recycled paper with the highest post-consumer content you can find (look at the back of the card for this information).

Bring canvas bags to use for all your holiday shopping. Canvas bags also make great gifts.

Make do without wrapping paper. Instead, use the colored comics, a new towel, scarf or decorator tin. The wrapper can become a part of the holiday gift. Holiday wrapping paper can also be reused. A friend of mine carefully unwraps her gifts, irons the paper and stores the paper in a box until next year. She says that not only is the paper handy, but she gets to relive holiday memories of years past. What a great idea! If you must use wrapping paper and you don't want to iron and store it for next year we will accept wrapping paper at the recycling dropoff center. Special boxes will be set up in late December.

Buy gifts with post-consumer content. The Keene Recycling Center offers backyard compost bins made from recycled plastic at wholesale cost as an example.

Once the holidays are over, send your old cards to St. Judes' Ranch for Children, 100 St. Jude Street, Boulder City, NV 89005. They accept all-occasion cards and will trim the cards and paste them onto new backs. They then sell the cards to raise money for their organization.

Make a donation to an environmental group in a friend or loved ones name.

Use only reusable decorations on your holiday tree. Avoid items such as tinsel which is hard to take off and reuse again. Holiday trees will be accepted at the Keene Recycling Center for chipping into mulch at no charge. All material must be removed from the tree including the stand and all ornaments.

Have a joyous holiday season.

Note: Charlie says- "Thanks to all those who take the time to recycle properly."
