Cheshire County is located in the Monadnock region of southwestern New Hampshire with a total area of over 736 square miles. With 19 square miles of inland waterways, 83% forested, the county remains relatively rural in character. The county population is 72,182 with the city of Keene (population 22,872) serving as the geographical and social-economic center of the county. The town of Swanzey (population 6,653) and Jaffrey (population 5,431) are the next largest communities in Cheshire. The remaining 52% of the population resides in relatively rural settings in the remaining 20 towns with populations ranging from 250 - 4,200. The split between those who were born in New Hampshire and those who have immigrated is about 50/50.

Cheshire County has a mix of rural villages, urban settings, forest and agricultural land, and numerous lakes and streams. The health and vigor of its diverse natural resources is an important attraction. While the economic base is industrial, business, and service oriented, tourism is very important to the area. Monadnock State Park in Jaffrey (location of Mount Monadnock, the most heavily climbed mountain in New England), the 13,000 acre Pisgah State Park in the southwest corner of the county, and Rhododendron State Park in Fitzwilliam are significant natural attractions to the area.

The Distinctive Shadow Of...
Grand Mount Monadnock

Mount MonadnockBesides being the most popular mountain in America, Grand Monadnock is known as the most climbed mountain in the world. Mount Fuji in Japan had this distinction before public transportation was provided to its summit. Now, in southwestern New Hampshire, 125,000 people every year hike to the top of Monadnock.

Covered Bridges of Cheshire County

If you pass along a quiet New England road in fall and come upon what appears to be someone's misplaced home, you're tempted to recall the romantic version of the origin of covered bridges.
They, of course, were built for discretely kissing your favorite girl while on a long buggy ride home from church...

The Chesterfield Gorge

is a naturally occurring geologic phenomenon located along Rt. 9 in Chesterfield, NH.

Geologists have three theories about the possible formation of Chesterfield Gorge. All the theories state that the rock bed of the gorge has been worn down by running water. Over thousands of years the stream has worn its path deeper and deeper into the bedrock. Ice has worked to break up the rock even more. As water in the cracks of the rock freezes, the ice expands to make large and small chunks break away from the cliffs. These two "weathering" forces continue to shape the gorge today.

But how did the stream get here in the first place? Here are the three theories:

One holds that the stream began in a fault. Faults are cracks in the Earth's crust in which rock on one side moves in relation to the other side. On either side of the crack the rock layers no longer line up.
